After climbing 1500 steps, you will reach to the "Maha Darvaja" (main door) of the Raigad Fort

The Raigad Fort is a good example of architectural brilliance. The Mahadarwaja (Main Door) of Raigad Fort is built in such a way that the fort will stay protected from enemy's attack with the help of elephant. A curvy and narrow way prevents elephant to get inside the fort.

"Meghdambari" is the holy place where "Shivrajyabhishek" (Coronation Ceremony) was held. At the time of Shivaji Maharaj's coronation twenty-thousand Brahmans were present at Raigad. Gaga Bhatt, an authority of Vedas officially presided over the ceremony, and had a gold vessel filled with the seven sacred waters of the rivers Yamuna, Sindhu, Ganges, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. He held the vessel over King Shivaji's head and chanted the coronation mantras, as the water kept dripping from the several tiny holes in the vessel. After the abulation, King Shivaji bowed before Jijamata and touched her feet. Nearly fifty thousand people gathered at Raigad for the ceremonies. Shivaji Maharaj was bestowed with the sacred thread jaanva, with the Vedas and was bathed in an abhisheka. Shivaji then had the title of "Shakakarta" conferred upon him.

Shivsamadhi was reconstructed by 'Shri Shivaji Fund Committee' founded by Lokmanya Tilak in 1895. Lokmanya Tilak (Bal Gangadhar Tilak) is one who struggles for freedom from British rule. In 1894, Lokmanya Tilak initiated to celebrate Ganeshotsav and Shiv Jayanti Utsav publically for national awakening against British rule. The main objective of this large-scale public celebration was to pay obeisance to the sacred Samadhi and awaken the patriotic spirit by eulogizing Shiv Chhatrapati.

Myth of The Waghya Dog

It is a myth about King Shivaji's beloved pet dog "Waghya". It is to be said that when he saw Shivaji Maharaja’s body being cremated, he jumped into the burning chitaah of Shivaji Maharaj and end up his journey of life. According to many historians, there is no evidence of existence of any pet dog of shivaji in the historical books and the material. If you would like to know more about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Waghya dog, then go through "Shiv Charitra" the book by historian "Babasaheb Purandare".

Ganga Sagar Lake in Front of Bale Killa (बालेकिल्ला) - Raigad Fort

It's a belief that this lake was built before King Shivaji's Rajyabhishek (crowning ceremony) and water had been brought to this lake from the holy river "Ganga". And that's why it is known as "Ganga Sagar Lake". The lake is situated in the front of 'Bale Killa'. Balekilla (बालेकिल्ला) means the central part of the fort and because of that it is the most protected area of the fort.
